1. I'm good to go. Where do I start? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
OK, so you have your saddlebags or panniers or some would call them leather ammunition boxes or bags and mounting frame ready. What's next .... ??? |
HOW TO INSTALL OR FIT LEATHER PANNIERS OR AMMUNITION BOXES Special thanks to Genuine '72 CJ750 M1 6V owner Bill W. from Western Australia for his efforts here in documenting everything. |
Tell a friend or three if you think they would also appreciate this installation advice. Simple one-click process below |

2. Optional bullet-proofing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
Bill has gone the extra yard and gel gripped in some insertion rubber & put 9.5mm fuel hose on the bolts so the mounting frames were a snug fit when mounted on the parcel rack. |
3. Snug fit ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
There should be no rattles and you are good-to-go to tighten the mounting frame into place |
4. Marking out ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
Next clamp the internal frame onto the mount and mark the pre-drilled marking holes onto the inner frame. Make sure the frame is the right way up - the extra bar should be at the bottom. Replicate the positioning on the other side. Line the two up with the front edges. |
5. "Dot" marks the spot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
Remove the inner frame out with markings on, drill a pilot hole for safety and then drill them out to the same size as the holes on the pannier mounting frames. Photo above shows Bill's white paint pen marking with the pre-drill hole in the centre. |
6. Punching leather ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
Insert frames into the pannier (right way up please – 2 holes at the top) and mark the holes inside the panniers. Remove frame for drilling. Top 2 holes are easy. Lower hole can be drilled from outside after using an awl. Screw bolts in using washers of course. |
7. Drilling true ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
The more accurate the drilling the easier it is to screw everything into place. As you tighten up the bolts it pulls everything nicely into place. Remember to repeat it on the other side. Chances are there is a sidecar in the way. But it won’t take you long the second time. |
8. Homeward stretch ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
You are on the homeward stretch. Those bolts on the luggage frame in the way? For most you will have a rear seat or pillion seat to add which will cover this. |
9. Wa-lah ... Bob's your ... |

10. Say "cheese" ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
Here in China you will hear "Qie-zi" written 茄子 instead of "cheese" which translates to egg-plant or aubergine. And who said the buying group program was just about sidecars! |
